Reciting Fatiha Outloud in Prayer
The Question
While leading Maghrib salaah, I starting reciting
sura Fatiha in my heart. After I started another
sura one of the person behind me informed me. At
this point I realized my mistake.
I made sajdah suhw. Is it correct what I have done.
The way I made the sajdah was recite till dua, make
right salam and two prostrations and than two
salams.
The Answer
Reciting outloud in the night prayers and in a low voice in day prayers is sunnah (i.e. recommended not obligatory). This is because the loudness of the voice is an attribute of the recitation, so it's not obligatory even when the recitation is obligatory. As a result, there is no need to do Sujood as-Sahw if one forgets to make the outloud prayer outloud, or the secret prayer secret. But, if one makes Sujood, the prayer should still be valid.
There are two ways to make Sujood as-Sahw. You either make it before Salaam (like te Shaafi'ee) or after Salaam (like the Hanafee, as you described below). If you make Sujood as-Sahw after the Salaam then you still have to make another Salaam after Sujood as-Sahw. Then there is a middle opinion (Maliki and Hanbali) that you do it before Salaam if you omitted from the prayer and you do it after Salaam if you added to the prayer. Whether you choose to do it before or after the Salaam should not affect the validity of Salaat according to the majority of the scholars.
By the way, the classes about Sujood as-Sahw are now uploaded on the bayareadawah website:
